The FAIRTRADE Mark

TransFair is a not-for-profit association which first started its activities in 1992.

Transfair's mission is to support disadvantaged producers in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and to improve their working and living conditions through Fairtrade.

Forty renowned organisations active in development co-operation, the church, social work, consumer protection, the co-operative system, and education are TransFair members.

Being an independent initiative, TransFair itself does not trade, but concedes its label to products traded fairly and according to license agreements.

Fair Trade criteria are based on the international standards of Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO). Through marketing, information and promotion activities, TransFair aims to gain further partners and supporters for Fairtrade.

The Five Guarantees

The Fairtrade Mark guarantees that

  • farmers receive a fair and stable price for their products
  • extra income for farmers and estate workers to improve their lives.
  • a greater respect for the environment
  • small farmers have a stronger position in world markets
  • a closer link between consumers and producers

A Fairtrade Paper "Core standards and practice behind the Five Guarantees" sets out the context for Fairtrade, why the guarantees behind the FAIRTRADE Mark are so important, and illustrates how these guarantees work in practice. The Paper can be found in full at www.fairtrade.org.uk/downloads/pdf/five-guarantees.pdf
